What are JIC Fittings?

JIC fittings, which stands for Joint Industry Council fittings, are standardized by SAE J514, and are a popular choice for fluid power applications. They’re engineered with a 37-degree flare seating surface and parallel threads and are commonly crafted from materials such as nickel alloys, brass, carbon, and stainless steel.

Hydraulic connections often feature JIC fitting, with both male and female components sharing a 37-degree seat. What are AN Fittings?

AN (Army-Navy) fittings, originating from a World War II Army-Navy size specification standard, are used to connect hoses and metal tubing. Initially designed for aerospace applications, they meet high-performance standards. However, they’ve been confused with their industrial equivalent, SAE 37° fittings, as they spread to land and sea uses. These fittings employ a 37° flare for sealing and shouldn’t be used with different flare-type fittings to prevent leaks and damage.

JIC vs. AN Fittings

JIC fittings are often confused with AN (Army Navy) fittings. Though dimensionally identical, AN military standards call for tighter tolerances and define all fitting types, while JIC uses AN specifications as their baseline and covers fewer sizes. For these reasons, JIC and AN fittings aren’t functionally interchangeable, requiring careful identification for a safe and leak-resistant seal.
