Temperature is an essential consideration in selecting the correct hose for your hydraulic system. The two primary temperature aspects to consider include the fluid temperature and the ambient temperature.

The fluid temperature impacts the inner of the hose

The fluid temperature largely impacts the ID (inner diameter) rubber material of the hose construction, considering that it will be directly in contact with the fluid. The ambient temperature refers to the environment where the hydraulic hose operates. The hose material should be able to withstand the environmental temperatures it will be exposed to, whether it’s extremely hot or cold.

Standard hydraulic hoses are designed to function in temperatures ranging from -40 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a comprehensive range covering most industrial applications. However, these temperature limits represent ambient temperatures. Running hydraulic fluid at 212° F, for instance, would not be sustainable, as the fluid would be prone to oxidation and evaporation. Furthermore, your pump and other system components could fail due to significantly reduced viscosity leading to insufficient lubrication.

The extreme ambient temperature

For more extreme ambient temperature conditions, high-temperature hydraulic hoses are available, which can withstand up to 300° F. It’s critical to note that the fluid inside these hoses should be appropriately cooled or conditioned to cope with the increased temperature radiated into it. For instance, if the hose is placed near a heat source, the heat will be absorbed through the hose and into the fluid, necessitating cooling systems to condition the fluid as it re-enters the hydraulic system.

In contrast, for extremely low ambient temperatures, as experienced in forestry work or snow grooming, the hose must maintain its flexibility. Flexibility is one of the main reasons to opt for hoses over tubing in many applications. Therefore, the hose material should not become brittle, hard, or susceptible to cracking in cold environments, especially during startup when the hydraulic fluid has not warmed up yet. The hose must also resist fatigue stress at the hose fitting connection, especially in dynamic applications with motion or movement.
